A bit about Salt

Salt supports Christians working within New Zealand's media, encouraging them in their faith and vocation.

You might be pleased to know that there are at least 300 Christians working as producers, directors, presenters, writers, journalists, editors, technicians, web designers and a vast array of other vital roles within New Zealand’s media.

Salt was started in 2010 by CBA to connect and support Christians working within New Zealand’s media, helping them to remain faithful and effective in their workplace. Keep scrolling to read more about our history.

Salt is currently led by Nathaniel Kandregula with the support of Elesha Gordon, Malorie Carey, Frank Ritchie and Petra Bagust.

We believe in

Engaging Connection

As we are in a world shaping us towards shallow encounters, isolation, and hurried lives, we place a high priority on fostering connection and meaningful relationships.

Engaging Deeply

As a network of Christians from varying faith traditions, we value space to question, learn, and grow in our understandings of God, humanity and creation.

Esteeming Vocation

We value the unique role media professionals play in our society, and celebrate those dedicated to their craft.

We offer support through

  • We’re able to pray for these people, support and uplift them, encourage them in their faith and assure them that – as isolated as they may feel at times – they certainly are not alone.

  • Events are a huge part of what we do! We run a wide range of large and small events across the country, from Dragons’ Den and Salt Soiree, to fondue nights, Christmas parties, and gatherings with deep-thinking guest speakers. We love to organise chances for you to network and be treated to a good time.

We also run exclusive events for groups such as Mums in Media, filmmakers and young journalists.

  • We offer one-on-one pastoral care and we bring Salites together for training and networking.

We are part of the Media Chaplaincy New Zealand family so have great connections with chaplains and pastors around the country who can provide what you need!

Also, we love a good coffee. Get in touch with us at info@salt.net.nz

  • We run an old-school library (real paper books!) with subjects that run the gamut of creativity to spirituality and that have relavance to the media vocation in some way.

Salties can peruse the titles online, read reviews, and select their faves to borrow. We’ll deliver in NZ free of charge, and enclose a return postage-paid courier bag.

  • Our aim is to connect senior, experienced connections with Salties wanting to be supported and mentored in their careers. Get in touch for more information.

A bit of history

Back in the wild days of 2010, our OG leader and founder Julia Bloore came up with the idea of Salt after conversations with Christians working in the media- many of whom were struggling to fuse their faith and career. From her conversations, three things stood out:

  1. People often felt alone in what they were doing.

  2. Many young Christians would get into the media and find it difficult to keep their faith.

  3. That some were finding the industry so stressful and contradictory to their beliefs that they were leaving and finding other work.

None of these things were very great. So Julia - along with the backing of the Christian Broadcasting Association - set out to create a network that would actually be helpful, enjoyable and non-demanding.

And tadaaaa Salt was born.

The initiative was officially launched at good ol’ Capitol Cinema with a movie screening. The team also launched its own social media platform - a website with a forum where people could connect and post with others in the network. Safe to say we have moved things over to a more popular social media network now…

In the last 13 years, things have really changed as the network expanded across the country with big events scattered across the years. We’ve given away thousands of dollars thanks to generous donors to help upskill and kickstart media projects for our Salties. We’ve run events from faith-based conferences to creative showcases. We’ve sent hundreds of care packages and travelled across the country to bring Salties together for training and networking. More importantly, we’ve wonderful opportunities to connect one-on-one, offering pastoral care and mentorship to those who need it.

We’re able to pray for these people, support and uplift them, encourage them in their faith and assure them that – as isolated as they may feel at times – they certainly are not alone.
